Hey guys..

I posted about 2 weeks ago how I got my new little baby, but I'm having trouble getting him to eat.

He's been in his set-up for 2 weeks now, and I've tried sticking the mouse into hot water for 30 minutes & hair drying it.. letting it defrost for 4 hours, hair drying it..
I've brained it, still nothing.
I've left it in overnight, and it's still in there in the morning :(

When I try to feed him, he doesn't seem interested at all.. I've tried to touch him with it, but he just seems scared of it, and hisses a little :/
Any ideas of what to try next?
I've heard of blending the mouse with a bit of water, and swapping his water with that?
Or is the live route going to be necessary?

Baring in mind he's never eaten, and he's now 3 weeks old.. How long will he be alright for before he's in danger of starving himself? :/

Please.. don't bash me for buying one before a feed; I just want him to eat :(

Thanks :)

have you tried pinkies?

i know they are small but i know of a breeder who gets the non feeder babies going on pinkies...

I also know that some people feed live pinkies...and then convert to defrost later,

I am just pm'ing someone for an answer and will get back to you as soon as she replies..

where are you based?

I haven't actually..
Could it be that the weaners are too big and intimidating for a first feed?

Thanks for the quick reply :)

A medium faun atm
(30L x 19W x 20H cm)

But he's only around 32cm long.. So it would be big enough for a few months; no?

Nono, that's in cm ^^

That's him right now..
I'm trying him on weaner mice atm; as you can see in the pic :/
(And I do have a thermostat + thermometer)
It does look huge compared to him, but that's because it's fluffed out after hair drying:)

Last time I tried was Friday night.
(And today)
And no, There's black card taped to 3 sides, and I put one on the top and the 4th side in the evenings, but take them off during the day.

He was from a large batch from Africa; so I'd imagine CF.
I'm from Kent :)

I'm going to get a pinky tomorrow, then try again Saturday night?

Thanks for your help wolf & lee ^^

you could try taking him out of his home and putting him in a smaller container with pinkie and cover him...

Has he shown any interest in his food?

Alright, I'll try to pick up a small rub at work tomorrow..

And no, he seems to be more scared of it then anything. I dangle it in front of him and he doesn't turn to it.. no reaction.
I've left it in there, and I caught him climbing over it; but apart from that.. nothing.
:(

here is the reply

"Honestly, LIVE rat fluff/crawlers or mice hoppers

People don't like it and will muck about with everything else but correct setup and 1 live to start gets the belly going and gives time to play."

I have also been asked to tell you that if you can get to Gravesend then they will help get him feeding, but that is up to you..the offer is there.

I would try giving it something without fur, a small rat pup or pinky for instance. Also, how often are you trying, because too often can stress them out too.

I'm not having a go (honestly), but you have made it difficult for yourself, buying a non-feeding CF Royal

this is the other reply i just got from another royal owner who has had non feeding babies..

"Ok, what I would do in this situation is:

1. Put the baby royal into something LIKE a 4-litre Really Useful Box - the one designed for a ream of A4 paper. Two hides - at least one of which MUST be a low profile one like an upside-down plastic plant saucer with a door cut in it. I find half a small plastic plant pot works well for the other.

2. Put that box somewhere where it can be covered with a towel or left completely in the dark MOST of the time.

3. The snake is not to be messed with EXCEPT to check water (daily check, but if there's still clean water, not to disturb the snake) and handled ONLY to clean out the tub once a week - not handled on feeding day at all. Lousy pet so far, eh? Can't look at it, can't play with it - not until it's an established feeder!

4. Once a week get a VERY warm rat pup (might be more appealing than mice) and wiggle it gently in front of the snake so that it can see it and smell it but doesn't feel threatened by it. If there's obvious interest - tongue-flicking, moving towards the rat pup, keep wriggling and moving it away - pretend it's a live pup that is rolling around in front of the snake. If it shows interest in the mousiedance but then tries to hide, very gently tap the snake's body (not head and neck) with the rat pup or tuck the rat pup into a U-bend of the snake and wiggle it (Hey, I've already half constricted this, I might as well actually EAT it!). If there isn't obvious interest - the snake balls up and tries to hide - leave the rat pup overnight.

If the rat pup is uneaten in the morning, remove it and *do not try again until next week*. A baby royal can go a surprisingly long time without feeding, especially if it's still working on the yolk in its belly."

Ok, I've bought a 4L lunchbox kinda thing - Will that be ok?
I'll cut holes etc in it all - and be able to get 2 low-profiled hides in there..

And the best place to put it might be under my bed? This way, I can put black card all around; so it's completey dark in the evnings/night.. and take it out during the day, so light still gets in?

I'll get some mice pinkys either later today or tomorrow - But if I move him into this new home; should I be leaving him another week before feeding him? Or would it be ok just to try a little on wednesday? and if that fails, go get a 'pet mouse' the following week?

Thanks for all your help ^^
