I was told that it helps them produce a vitamin or something that helps them to digest their food. The vet even said that & she is an exotic specialist. I probably won't bother with it then.

UVB light helps lizards to make vitamin D, which healps them to absorb the calcium in their diet. It isnt necessary for snakes.

Light is definitely not a requirement for a nocturnal species. But, a photo period does help for the snake to know the days from the night. But, this could be just the natural light coming through a window. Unless the snake is in a basement or a window-less room, the added light has no benefit. Now, heat is important - so, if you're using the light as a heat source, then yes, it is necessary.

If you do add light for aesthetics, use a bulb instead of a flourescent.

I don't use it as a heat source, I have a ceramic bulb for that. I have unplugged her light so will see how she gets on. She is by a window so should get sufficient light. She used to climb up onto the light when it had gone out at night, presumably because of the heat. Nowadays she doesn't have anything more than her head out of her hide so I don't think she will miss it
